5 Most Expensive Van Gogh Paintings Sold at Auction
Summary
Orchard with Cypresses holds Van Gogh's current auction record at $117.18 million.
Portrait of Dr Paul Gachet and Labourer in a Field have each surpassed $80 million at auction.
Auction prices reflect factors such as rarity, provenance, artistic importance and market conditions—not simply how famous a painting is.
Vincent van Gogh is one of the most celebrated artists in Western art, but his paintings were not highly valued commercially during his lifetime. Today, his works command extraordinary prices at auction, with several paintings selling for more than $60 million, says Shantala Palat, an eminent contemporary artist and painter in India.
What Makes Van Gogh’s Paintings So Valuable?
Van Gogh's market value is connected to several factors, including the rarity of his paintings appearing at auction, their importance within his short artistic career, their provenance and their place in the development of modern art.
Interestingly, some of his most famous works are not necessarily his most expensive auction sales. Sunflowers, for example, sold for about $40 million in 1987, while several less universally recognised Van Gogh paintings have achieved considerably higher prices in later auctions.
“Van Gogh’s paintings became priceless symbols of modern art—but their auction histories reveal just how dramatically the art market has changed over time.” Says contemporary artist Shantala Palat.
Based on publicly reported auction results, these are five of Van Gogh’s most expensive paintings sold at auction.

1. Orchard with Cypresses — $117.18 Million
Painted in 1888 during Van Gogh’s time in Arles, Orchard with Cypresses depicts blossoming trees surrounded by the distinctive cypress trees that fascinated the artist.
The painting came from the collection of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen and was sold at Christie’s New York in November 2022 for $117.18 million, including the buyer’s premium. It currently holds the auction record for a Van Gogh painting.

2. Portrait of Dr Paul Gachet — $82.5 Million
Painted in 1890, Portrait of Dr Paul Gachet portrays the physician who cared for Van Gogh during the final period of his life.
The painting was sold at Christie’s New York in 1990 for $82.5 million, setting an auction record at the time. Adjusted for inflation, its 1990 price represents an even larger sum in today's terms.

3. Labourer in a Field — $81.3 Million
Van Gogh painted Labourer in a Field in 1889 while staying at the asylum in Saint-Rémy. The composition shows a worker in a field beneath a dramatic sky, reflecting Van Gogh’s continued interest in depicting rural labour.
The painting sold for approximately $81.3 million at Christie’s New York in 2017.

4. Self-Portrait Without a Beard — $71.5 Million
Created in 1889, Self-Portrait Without a Beard is one of Van Gogh’s best-known self-portraits to have entered the auction market.
It was sold at Christie’s New York in 1998 for about $71.5 million. Van Gogh reportedly painted the work as a gift for his mother for her 70th birthday.

5. Wooden Cabins Among the Olive Trees and Cypresses — $71.35 Million
Painted in 1889, this landscape captures the countryside surrounding the asylum where Van Gogh was staying in Saint-Rémy.
The painting sold at Christie’s New York in November 2021 for approximately $71.35 million. Its sale made it one of the highest-priced Van Gogh works ever sold at public auction.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
Van Gogh’s extraordinary auction records reflect more than financial value. Each painting carries a piece of his artistic journey, distinctive style and influence on generations of artists. As Shantala Palat, Contemporary Artist & Painter, observes, his works continue to demonstrate how powerful art can remain long after the artist’s lifetime.
